Who are we?
Netherurd Singing Circle is composed of people who enjoy singing and who are or have been active in Guiding – many are active Guiders or Trefoil Guild members still. Our members come from all over the UK, not just Scotland, but we are based at Netherurd, the Scottish Training and Activity Centre in the Scottish Borders. There are singing circles all over the UK and some people are members of several. . . Every couple of years there’s a Meet somewhere in the UK when members of lots of singing circles or groups get together – yes, to sing.
We meet twice a year for a weekend at Netherurd, when we simply enjoy singing together. It’s difficult to define what we sing – part songs, rounds, songs with guitar or piano, unaccompanied songs, folk songs, songs with words which make you think. It doesn’t matter really – we just want to make music together.
We do try to help Netherurd too – every two years we run a fundraising weekend in December, the proceeds of which go to the Centre. This usually takes the form of a themed seasonal event on the Sunday afternoon, for which tickets are sold. Entertainment is on the stairs at Netherurd, and there are stalls, games and food as well.
In between weekends we sometimes meet for a day’s singing, usually in Glasgow or Edinburgh, and we are quite often asked to lead some singing with groups visiting Netherurd or in Counties round Scotland. We’ve also been away on holiday as a group – to northern Scotland, Bruges and most recently Switzerland in 2015.
Oh, and we like singing on staircases – if you know of a good one, please let us know!
